*Conciliar Meeting 18-21 Oct. 2012 in Frankfurt/Main

Signs of the times – Hope and Resistance“ –

Reform group meeting commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council*

Under the motto „Signs of the times – Hope and Resistance“, more than 30 reform groups will be commemorating the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council on 11 October 1962 by holding a 4-day conciliar meeting in Frankfurt/Main from 18 to 21 October 2012.

*„It is time for the Church to wake up from its paralysis“*

/„Fifty years after the Second Vatican Council, it is time for the Church to wake up from its paralysis“/, these words from the invitation to the conciliar meeting have been signed by nearly all important church reform groups, clergy associations and sociocritical groups.

/„Not prepared to wait any longer for clergy and hierarchy to lead the way, we are going to set off on our own. We want to live up to our social responsibility in this world by reversing the disappropriation of our ecclesiastical heritage and by reappropriating our Church in the service of this task. This is the invitation to a first large meeting.

It is now time to „investigate the signs of the times and interprete them in the light of the Gospel“ (Gaudium et spes Nr. 4 ). We call on you to remember and further pursue the Second Vatican Council. We call on you to concertedly search for the chances and challenges facing the Church as a community following the crucified and resurrected Jesus from Nazareth. And do this in communion with all those who fight, hope, work, and pray in and for this world, wherever they may come from.“/

*“Recognising the signs of the times“ - this was the phrase which inspired great hope during the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s, both within the ranks of the Church and beyond. It was about questioning what Christianity and Church could mean in the modern world: a phase of departure and encouragement, of strengthening the self-confidence of the laity and the blossoming of Liberation Theology, a Church taking the side of the poor. However, the disappointment over the results is bigger than ever.

*“a different way of being human in a different Church for a different world“*

The conciliar meeting in Frankfurt wants to take a stand against this disappointment. It introduces a phase of public remembrance for the Council lasting until 2015 and draws on the new beginnings from 50 years ago. „Giving testimony of the hope inside ourselves.“ There are many reasons why the impetus of the council has not been maintained, this is something which will have to be discussed during the meeting. Instead of facing its responsibilities the Church has withdrawn more and more from the challenges which it itself formulated. The hopeful, hazardous and open departures of God's wandering people have turned into the „Fortress of Rome“, a rigid, clergical apparatus of power. Despite the enormous numbers of Christians leaving the Church there are scance signs of a turnaround. Preaching is mistaken for dialogue, tailored cassocks for sustainable identity and administrative reforms to increase efficiency for the education of the parishes...

*But fewer and fewer people let themselves be defined by the patriarchal apparatus of the Church.* This Church and its intrinsic good can no longer be understood without the women, without the numerous reform groups, without those for whom the ecumenical movement is all-encompassing, those who are politically active, pro refugee and against unemployment, fighting against the ever-widening chasm between the rich and the poor.

*Programme overview*

During the opening event „The Council and the current signs of the times.“ (Thursday night, 28 Oct 2012 18.00 hours) *Hans Küng*, the theologian from Tübingen, who was an official consultant to the Council at the time, and the almost nonagenarian Council father *Bishop Luigi Bettazzi* from Italy will evoke the strong impetus of reform generated by the Council in the years 1962 to 1965. Bishop Luigi Bettazzi is the last remaining member of the „Catacomb Pact“, whose numerous members among the Council's bishops committed themselves to the poor. *Susan George*, one of the founding members of Attac, will look back at the Council from outside the Church, during a major event in the highly symbolic Paulskirche in Frankfurt.

In the following days a wide range of civil groups are offering *more than fifty workshops and activities* in order to jointly develop new ways leading to a different Church. They want to speak about those things which are the concern of many people who still let themselves be moved by the spirit of the Gospel. To live Christianity within capitalism means to take over responsibility – for ourselves and for our fellow human beings all over the world. Many important topics such as migration and asylum for refugees, globalisation and world (dis)order, equal rights for men and women, a Church without hierarchies and the responsible handling of natural resources are just some of the wide variety of themes which will be discussed with guests from home and abroad and also with Liberation Theologians from Brazil.

On Friday night (19 Oct 2012, 20.00 hours) the central question will be *„What kind of Church do we need in view of the challenges of our times?“* This will be addressed by the feminist US theologian *Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza*, *Helmut Schüller* - spokesman for the Austrian priests initiative, and the journalist *Michael Jäger*. Before that *Micha Brumlik*, the Jewish professor for educational science will talk about „the heritage of Auschwitz“ at this historical location.

Following a *liturgical celebration on Saturday night* (20 Oct 2012, 19.30 hours) with music group RUHAMA, Sunday (21 Oct 2012, 10-13.00 hours) will be reserved for drafting joint positions and ideas for future cooperations, with – among others - Johann Baptist Mertz, the founder of the new Political Theology. The final statement – so the organisers hope – will bear testimony to the spirit of the Council, that something new has begun.

The *venues* for these events from Friday to Sunday have been chosen with care: The Gallus hall (location of the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials from 1964 to 1965), the Catholic Parishes of Maria Hilf and Sankt Gallus as well as the Evangelische Friedensgemeinde. The Gallus district, where different people, communities and religions live together, is an appropriate location for this unique conciliar meeting in the shadow of Frankfurt's towering bank buildings, the true cathedrals of our times.

The different threads of *preparation* for the */conciliar meeting/* all merge at the Institute for Theology and Politics in Münster. Joint organisers are, among others, Leserinitiative Publik/, the ecumenic initiative /Initiative Kirche von unten/ (IKvu) as well as the people's movement /Wir sind Kirche/.

selbst formulierten Herausforderungen entzogen.
