12.11.: Eindrücke vom zweiten Versammlungstag

Urs Eigenmann, Schweiz

Thursday, November 12th 2015 / Commemorate and renew the Pact of the Catacombs!

At the gathering of christian grassroot movements two subjects marked the day: In the morning the swiss theologian Urs Eigenmann spoke about the fact that the II. Vatican Council shamefully neglected the topics of the “Kingdom of God” and of a Church of the Poor. Because of this especially the hope for the Kingdom of God from the biblical and early christian tradition should be shifted again into the center of the ecclesial life to play a more important role.

In the evening the brazilian Bishop Erwin Kräutler, who participated in the editing of the encyclical on ecology “Laudato Si”, gave a speech on the catastrophic effects of unscrupulous exploitation of the nature in the rainforest of the Amazon in Brazil. Erwin Kräutler is committed to the struggle against the building of mega power plants and the expulsion of many indigenous people due to the destruction of their living environment. Because of this he has threatened repeatedly with death. Kräutler stated, that the question of ecology can not be treated independently from the social question because with the destruction of nature the whole humanity is put at risk.

The workshops in the afternoon were held about themes such as Fortress Europe and the necessity of a church without borders, the increasing inequality and poverty, but also about the ecclesial breakups in Latin America. With Kacem Gharbi, one of the most important persons working on a muslim theology of liberation in North Africa, the participants of the conference entered into a dialog between Christianity and Islam about the possibility of reading and living the Koran as liberating message from the colonial an neoliberal-capitalist structures of exploitation.
